CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY
Cranial osteopathy is based on the same principle idea inherent through osteopathy; that structure governs function. Cranial Osteopathy is a refined and subtle type of osteopathic treatment that uses very gentle manipulative pressure to correct mechanical disturbances throughout the body, including the head. It is extremely effective in treating a wide range of conditions in people of all ages, from birth to old age.
What is the difference between a Cranial Osteopath and Structural Osteopath? In their training, Osteopaths are taught a variety of treatment modalities. Osteopaths vary in their treatment methods depending on their own preference and individual patient's problems, ranging from the well known 'high velocity thrust' with its dramatic clicks, to the very gently applied methods used by 'Cranial Osteopaths'. 'Cranial Osteopath' is the name by which Osteopaths who work at the gentler, subtle end of the spectrum of different treatment approaches, have become known.
All Cranial Osteopaths undergo an undergraduate 4 year degree in osteopathic medicine. The "cranial" technique is a specialised field which some osteopaths undertake as a specialisation at a postgraduate level.
What conditions can Cranial Osteopathy treat? Cranial osteopathy is often associated with babies however it lays its main emphasis in treating dysfunction in children and adults alike. This dysfunction may be caused by labour for a newborn, or a car accident in adulthood, the result still remains- an area of pain and a dysfunction in our bio mechanical structure.
Osteopaths treat the whole person, not just the condition. A wide range of conditions can be treated.
What will happen when I go to visit a Cranial Osteopath? The first consultation can last up to 60 minutes. The osteopath will primarily take a detailed case history, including past history as well as what brought you to that point. By taking into account individual factors, this allows for a holistic and comprehensive view of your health.
The osteopath will then carry out an examination of the body and carry on with treatment if appropriate.
Treatment is designed to correct each individual's strain patterns and mechanical problems in order to stimulate their own natural healing processes. Treatment will involve using gentle cranial osteopathic techniques.
